Flowers evoke memories

Ahhhh, there is something just so special to me about a snowdrop. When I was just a wee little lady our family uprooted from New Zealand to the wonders of Hampshire in England for a few years. Those years were inspiring to me in a number of ways, not least for the excitement and wonder that the English countryside offers - especially to a 6 year old!

We lived in a wee cottage up a tiny country lane flanked on all sides by productive pastures. This time heralded so many firsts in my little life - the first time I saw snow, the first joys of a white Christmas, blackberry bushes along countryside walks boasting plump fruit ripe for the taking, country fairs, vibrant hedgerows, snowdrops and bluebells!

Ahhhhh these wee flowers that took over meadows and woodland. Everywhere you looked as winter gave way to spring, carpets of snowdrops, blankets of bluebells. And so when I see those wee characterful flowers now I am instantly transported back to that magical time. There simply is nothing quite like an English spring!

Memories can so easily be stimulated by music or language...but now I find myself travelling through floral memories too. How rather divine. I wonder whether my bluebells that I planted to naturalise in the lawn will do my English country memory justice? 🌿
